Infra Red Beak Trimming
Due to the proposed legislation to ban beak trimming along with pressure from the RSPCA to cease, in their minds, the mutilation of chicks, Country Fresh Pullets has been at the forefront in leading research into the new Infra Red Beak Trimming machine which is widely used in other countries.
The Infra Red process involves treating the hard keratin tip of the beak with Infra Red energy. The tip of the beak that is treated then falls away after a few days without any mutilation of any kind.
The Company has now completed extensive field trials for DEFRA. A scientific trial has taken place comparing non beak trimmed and conventional beak trimmed versus the new Intra Red methods, with the results being very positive.
Hy-Line is leading the way by introducing these machines into their millennium hatchery and it is hoped that, in the near future, derogation will be given by Freedom Foods to allow this process to be adopted universally by the industry.
